Summer Skin-Saver: Cucumbers!
Summer Skin-Saver: Cucumbers!

Fresh, crunchy cucumbers are not only low in calories and high in fiber -- they’re also full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can feed your complexion from inside and out. Here's how:

Refresh and protect. Cucumbers contain vitamin C and caffeic acid, two antioxidants that, when applied to the skin, help fend off wrinkles, sun damage, and more. Vitamin C builds collagen and elastin, protein fibers that give skin its youthful plumpness. "Caffeic acid inhibits cancer cells and protects skin cells exposed to UV radiation," says New York dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD. No wonder many spas offer hydrating face treatments made of crushed cucumber. Home version for kitchen divas: In a blender, barely puree half a cucumber and 2–3 tablespoons of plain yogurt -- it should be thick, not drippy. Pat all over your face and neck, sit back for about 15 minutes, then rinse, and relish how good your skin feels.

Deflate puffy peepers. Chilled cucumber slices act like delicate mini ice packs, relieving puffy eyes. One reason: Cukes are 90% water, which helps them stay chilly even on hot spots. "Their cold minimizes the swelling by constricting the blood and lymph vessels that bring fluid to the eye area," says Dr. Wechsler.

Get the red out. Cucumbers' natural anti-inflammatories calm and soothe skin reddened by rosacea or sunburn. "Place thin, cold slices on the 'butterfly' region of your face, starting around your nose and spreading out onto your cheeks -- or anywhere there's redness," says Dr. Wechsler. After a 15-minute lie-down, remove, then apply a light moisturizer. Alternatively, try Peter Thomas Roth's Cucumber Gel Masque, one of those cult beauty products that, even at $45, gets rave reviews from ordinary users.

Pamper every inch. If you're feeling adventurous, try this super skin softener used in Korean bathhouses. Grate a whole cucumber -- including the dark green peel, which is rich in skin-friendly potassium, magnesium, and copper, says Dr. Wechsler. Stir in just enough milk and safflower oil -- two other skin wonders -- to make a thick soup, and warm it in the microwave. Then, using a loofah, scrub down your whole body with the mixture and shower off (make sure your drain’s got a good strainer). Your skin will feel satiny soft, and your bath and body will smell amazing. There's a reason Kiehl's sells a cucumber essence oil.

Anyone with oily skin? Try Clean and Clear face wash. It comes in an orange color, its not the face scrub. Try it you will love it! Oh then use the OLAY face moisturizer, the original.

I think the fact about cukes are very true. I use grated juice of fresh cuke with my massage cream or any cream that you use for the night - massage it slowly in a gentle upward and outward fashion for about 5 minutes and then wash off with warm water and pat dry your face - you can do this every weekend or whenever you have ten minutes to spare. This is really good for your skin and it is a good toner also.

Or you could just eat healthy, put an icepack on you, put some oatmeal in bathwater and take a nice bath from there, maybe put on some aloe vera gel, eat some Gerber banana foods or rely on Neutrogena to take care of your skin or olive oil, coconut oil, retin A, or something else. One size never fits all in this category.

A while back I read about a women who was having bad headaches after eating sugar. I hope the following will answer some of her questions as to what is happening in her body and how she can deal with it. This process is not a quick fix. It will take a while to get all of the sugar out of your system. However, your life will be enriched greatly because of the efforts that you take. Your spouce and your kids will benefits as well as yourself.
My Story:
Many years ago, (1970's) when I worked at the U of M Hospital, the Dr. who was the head of the dept. I work in, told me not to eat sugar after he found out the difficulties that I was having. (By the way, this man was brilliant and ahead of his time.) In the many years since then, I have kept on top of information as it has become available.
When I first went off sugar I went through withdrawel. Back then many of the products that are available today did not exist.
I was in my mid twenties when I first gave up sugar. I had one relaps approximately ten years later but have stayed the course since then.
What Is Happening Physically:
The reason why you receive headaches after eating sugar is due to a chemical imbalance in your brain. Somewhere along the line, your system, like mine, has been unable to break down sugar the way it is supposed to and dumps way to much insulin into our system. This is what causes the headaches. I know how very, very intense these headaches can be i.e., migrain intensity. The real kicker is that nothing seams to be able to kill them.
Preventative Measures:
Every once in a while I will cheat and eat sugar. When I do Advil is always close by. For some reason, Advil not only stops the immeidate reaction from starting, but if taken just prior to going to bed, will prevent the morning after headaches. Also, if meat is eaten prior to eating sugar it has the ability to minimize or prevent the reaction from begining. The protein in the meat changes the way in which the body processes the sugar.
Terminology:
When using the term sugar, I am refering to both cane and beat, brown and/or white sugar. This form of sugar is not only found in food but also in alcohol.
Alcohol:
You will find that staying away from many wines, wine coolers, brandy, rum and other alcoholic beverages that have a fermenting process that produces sugar are best. Vodka is made from potatoes and will not cause the problems that many other alcoholic beverages will.
Label Reading:
You will find yourself becomeing an avid label reader. If you don't read labels already it will become a way of life. When reading labels look for products that have fructose, corn syrup or any combination of the two in them. Or go all natural. Again, more expensive, better tasteing and better for you
Fructose:
Fructose is made from corn and has the same molecular structure as our bodies so when we consume it our bodies can not tell the difference. You can find fructose in granular form in the health food section of most grocery stores. However, I would recommed going to a coop and ordering it in bulk form. Of the two ways to purchase fructose, this is the cheapest. It is more expensive than sugar, but isn't your well being worth it? To me it sure is! The down side with fructose is that it metabolises a lot faster than other forms of sugar. I will live with this any day of the week compaired to what sugar does to my system. It also has a different intensity of sweetness and can be easily substituted in receipes.
Bodily Changes:
As you get into making the changes in the way you shop for food and the things you purchase you will begin to notice a difference in how you feel. The sluggishness that was always present, you will probably not realized that it was present until after you no longer have it. You will feel more alive, less blah, your muscles will be less tight and you will find that you are not as short tempered. It is amazing the changes you will notice not only physically but also emotionally and mentally.
Sugar History:
Sugar is very addicting so expect some form of withdrawel when you quite. With Advil it may not be as noticeable as it was for me back in the preAdvil days. In the preindustrial revolution days sugar was treated as a poinson and a medicine. After the industrial revolution and with the influx of people into cities, honey could not be harvested in large enough quantities or fast enough to deal wth the growing demand for a sweatner. Hence the turn to the sugar plant. As our society has changed from an industrial to an information society our type of work has become less physically intense and more brain intense and the increase in the level of physical, as well as, emotional stress has increased dramatically. Combine all of these factors and one has a situtation that is ripe for our systems to have a MAJOR problem being able to digest sugar.
Spenda:
Be careful with Splenda. It is a derivative of sugar and is very popular. However, it can still cause your system problems since the molecular structure of the sugar itself has not changed. You may not notice with one serving, however there is an accumlative build-up just like with sugar.
Changes Due To A Decrease In Sugar:
As there is less and less sugar in your system, you will find your emotions become calmer and your ability to handle stress increase. Sugar puts you on a very short fuse because it increases the stress on your system both physically, as well as, emotionally. This happens primarily becase sugar accumlates in your system. There is not one area of your life that the results of sugar do not touch.
Medical Professional Knowledge:
Doctors will not be able to help you much with this problem simply because they receive way to little education on nutrition. A nutritionalist, depending upon their experience, may or may not have this information. To my knowledge this is not taught anywhere.
Hospialization:
When, or if you ever end up in a hospital, DO NOT have a regular IV, as it is nothing but sugar water. You will need to make sure you have an IV that is sodium based otherwise it can add many problems to your current medical situation.
Closing:
This has been a way of life for me for almost forty years (I am currently in my mid fifties). I know just how deadly sugar can truly be.
For those who do not have any trouble digesting sugar, consider yourself fortunate. File this information away and use it to help someone else. For those who are having this difficulty and have no idea what is causing the problem or why certain things are happening in your body, I hope this answers some of your questions and is able to help you live a much healthier and happier life.
All the information I have given you I have gained from expereience and from staying on top of information as it becomes available. If you would like verification of what I have said you will have to do your own research in order to obtain it. I do not know of any professional who can give it to you.
I hope this information helps answer some questions for many different people. I truly wish you all an enriched life.

The cucumber information is really good and natural. One needs to stay with all natural products and foods which will also enhance the skin and contribute to one's health. I am President of North Shore Essentials, Inc. a manufacturer of Green Leaf Essentials Intensive Skin Care Products with a higher concentration of synergistic blends that are typically on the market. Our products are all natural carrier and essential oils that all have ingredients that are commonly known to have Antiseptic, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal & Anti-viral properties including natural minerals, vitamins, preseratives and fragrances of in the Essential Oils that hydrate, soften and gives a younger fresh skin appearance. This is not to solicit, but to show that my comments are credible. The above information on the cucumber is very good and would be a great home product for all skin types. Real Age does give excellent information.

Sharron is correct about using olive oil for skin and hair. I tried everything for the dry skin on my face. I have used olive oil for more than 5 years and my dermatoligist approves. I put it on every night including my hands and arms to reduce the dark age spots of the exposed arms of an avaid gardner.

with any problems, you MUST change your diet. load up on organic fruits/veggies. for hair problems buy a rebounder from reboundair and start with 20 mins a day to help your body. hope this helps!

Do not use olive oil on ur skin! R you women crazy!! Most of us have oily prone skin or dry skin with a cpl. oil spots trust me olive oil will NOT work. Instead try regular oatmeal.mix up ur oatmeal with plain water then heat in micro for a minute then spread all over ur face. Let sit 5min. wash off. This is great for minimizing pores and reducing break outs. Also for those out there worried about lose skin on the face apply just the egg white to ur face let dry wash off with dove sensitive bar soap works like a charm!

I worked in a farm coop. Found out all the old timers take colostrum (look it up). Also I do a shot of MSM (sulfur) every morning. I was loosing my hair due to stress, and now my nails are long and strong, my arthritis isn't as problematic, colds blow right past my husband and me, on and on. You can buy these products at Health food stores, but just go to your local farm store. Same stuff, $1,000.00's cheaper.

An answer for PrettyP: Solution for dark circles under eyes: Arbonne's NutriMinC RE9 eye cream, and their Cream Concealer. By using both products, you'll see faster results. A friend of mine HAD horrible dark circles under her eyes, she looks much better now. Both products also counteract puffiness under eyes. I can help you obtain these products, at ellengraham@cox.net.

I am 57 years old, my skin is very sensitive, I have got too many moles and warts on my throat and back of the neck. I feel bad when everyone
tells me to get it removed by
operating, sometimes I cant wear low neck dresses. Is there any other way it can be removed by home remedies.

Hi,
I am 52 years old and suffering of all type of color allergy I can't apply any kind of color almost have tried every brand available, all these years I was using henna black and red mixed to bring the right color and apply on my hair but unfortunately that is giving me allergy as well ..the kind of reaction that I get after applying anything is severe headache and redness.. I was wondering if there is any type of vitamin or food that can reduce these symptoms as you know grey hair looks very ugly..
Thank you

A product called Nourkin is very good for hair loss (not hair breakage--that's another issue). I agree that olive oil is a wonderful general conditioner that nourishes the hair shaft, but does not address hair loss. The ideas about cucumber & yogurt for skin and eyes are wonderful I have been doing both the mask and the eye "de-puffers" for years with very good results. Cold tea bags are also very effective. I think the ads are acceptable because many people want an easier/faster alternative and can't always easily obtain, store or prepare the fresher "home made" treatments. Think college students here.

Hair loss? Try vitamin B complex 150 or B12 shots, if you can get them. Vitamine pills worked for me. Shots worked for mom.

Can you tell me how to get rid of black cirles under my eyes please,

Posted by: prettyp | May 30, 2008 at 11:17 AM

yes that would be a great snack! protean and the antioxidents in the cucumbers (whicht are practicly no fat) are wonderful. but read your lables carfully, many of them are adding suger to them in the forms of dextrose, sugrose and or corn surup. they are also using alot corn starch fillers to cheapen it. so read your lables!

Posted by: sharron | May 30, 2008 at 08:45 AM

hair prob people, try olive oil. it soaks into your hair and is really great. put it on and leave it for about 5min and then wash out any remaining oil in the shower. good on your skin too. it has anti bacteral qualitys as well and helps with things like seriosis. i can't spell but i know what i am talking about. also try not to get too much shampoo in your hair itself. shampoo is for your scalp not really your hair. conditioner is for your hair and should be aplyed from the tipps up. once i found that out my hair became the stuff that people would beg to toucht. if you want proff go the clinton arkansas and ask for the red head with the long curly hair.

Posted by: karen | May 30, 2008 at 08:07 AM

Wow...I love this site, but I think this is the first time I've seen it use advertorial elements (advertising via editorial.) Wouldn't it be more ethical to mention that the Kiehl's product and the Roth gel mask were being advertised, not just recommended? Maybe that's obvious to some people, but others who may put a lot of faith in Real Age, and who may not have an extra $45 to spend of face gel, might buy the product anyway just because RA "recommended" it.
