10 Ways to Outwit Your Appetite
10 Ways to Outwit Your Appetite

You don't have to be smarter than a quiz-show fifth-grader to learn how to control the urge to eat. Just follow these ingenious tips to keep your appetite under wraps:

Feed it protein for breakfast. You'll be less hungry later on and end up eating 267 fewer calories during the day. At least that's what happened on days when St. Louis University researchers gave overweight women two scrambled eggs and two slices of jelly-topped toast for breakfast rather than about half that protein.

Make it climb a flight of stairs. At home, store the most tempting foods way out of reach. For instance, Cornell University food psychologist Brian Wansink, PhD, keeps his favorite soda in a basement fridge. "Half the time I'm too lazy to run down there to get it, so I drink the water in the kitchen."

Sleep on it. People who don't get their 8 hours of ZZZs experience hormonal fluctuations that increase appetite, report researchers. Learn more about how sleep affects your diet.

Give it something else to think about. When scientists scanned the brains of people eating different foods, they found that the brain reacts to fat in the mouth in much the same way that it responds to a pleasant aroma. So if you feel a craving coming on, apply your favorite scent.

Never let it see a heaping plate. The more food that's in front of you, the more you'll eat. So at a restaurant, ask your waiter to pack up half of your meal before serving it to you, then eat the extras for lunch the next day.

Put it under the lights. You consume fewer calories at a well-lit restaurant table than you do dining in a dark corner. "In the light, you're more self-conscious and worry that other patrons are watching what you eat," explains Wansink.

Talk it down. Entertaining friends with a great story doesn't give you much time to eat up, so you'll probably still have food on your plate when they're done. Once they're finished, call it quits, too.

Offer it a seat. If you sit down to snack -- and use utensils and a plate -- you'll eat fewer calories at subsequent meals.

Satisfy it with soup. Start lunch with about 130 calories worth of vegetable soup and you'll eat 20% fewer calories overall during lunch, say Penn State experts.

Give it little choice. Packages that contain assorted varieties of cookies, candy, dips, cheese, etc., make you want to try all the flavors. The effect is so powerful, says Wansink, that when people are given 10 colors of M&Ms to munch on, not 7, they eat 30% more!

Oh, and one more thing: Feeding your appetite a diverse diet that is low in calories and high in nutrients can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger. Sweet.

I suffered from RLS for several years. I started seeing a chiropractor and I am symptom free. I was skeptical when I started seeing him. Now I am a believer. He felt it was a nerve causing it. He was right! I have a monthly adjustment now.

To Angela, I was doing the same thing with my weight and exercise and found if I walked and did short jogs I lost more weight.I am not a runner so this really reved my heart rate up to cardio burning, where as walking I was not seeing alot of results. Also if you don't have one ,get one, an airpopper to pop corn in in the evening. Let that be the only thing you eat after supper that night. It tookn about a month to lose but, I am losing like crazy now. Also the jogging thing has helped me to reduce the belly fat, from being a apple build and a child, that I could never seem to get to go away. It's not all gone but, it is moving.

I too have restless legs syndrome and have had this for years. I have tried any and all suggestions ever made and nothing has ever worked except medication (Requip). Doctors don't even know what causes RLS - that's why it's called a "syndrome". RLS is a horrible thing to have; it will drive you insane. I have even read of people who wanted to cut off or shoot off their leg(s) just to get some relief.

I HAD A STROKE IN 1998 AND MY LEFT SIDE IS WEAK AND CAN NOT WALK WITHOUT MY WALKER OR WHEEL CHAIR. WHAT KIND OF EXERCISES CAN I DO TO LOSE WEIGHT? I HAVE ONLY LOST 8 LBS AND NOW AM STUCK WITH THIS MINIMAL LOSS.

I have a broken foot and am in a hard cast. This has been for the last 3 yrs. I can't walk. As a result, my back is going out as well as my knees. Is there anything I can do with regard to exercising. I work part-time in a physical rehab clinic and do get some walking in with a crutch

Without question and I've seen them all - This new weight loss juice is having insane testimonials. Help suppress your appetite but also increases metabolism about 500% more than green tea and coffee.
Came out about a month ago I think.

To Florencia: I have a comment from experience. My husband had high ferric count (iron). Dr. told him to avoid extra Vitamin C, because that helps absorb Iron! He had to have blood withdrawn to lower his abnormally high ferric count (600)

Posted by: Cathy | January 31, 2009 at 06:22 AM

I am a 64 year old woman with type two diabetes. My doctor told me "iron is too high" and stop taking my Iron pill i don't take any iron pill, I am taking multi-vit Centrum silver. she want me to take B Comlex Vit. My Question is what causes the high iron in my body and what to avoid. Thanks Dr Oz, hoping for your help.

Posted by: Florencia | January 30, 2009 at 07:41 AM

I found out my restless legs were caused by being low on iron. I just got a bottle of tablets at the grocery store, took one a day and it took care of it! Give it a try! :-)

Hi, I have lost 30lbs and started out at 187 (5'7"). I am 61 yrs old and have found it much harder to take off the wait than in my youth...I cook alot and have a large family around me...When one cooks and smells all of the aroma, my mouth waters constantly and is a torture to me... SOOO, when I am done cooking and passing out the food I take one bite of each and it tends to help alot and then I LEAVE the kitchen for the sanctity of my foodless bedroom...AND it works...except for all those commercials on TV lol...

What is the cause of fibroid?

Posted by: phentermine reviews | January 19, 2009 at 07:54 AM

I've been doing so much lately and taking so many products. But the best in my opinion is bar non a glutathione pill I take as well as some Goji Juice.
Here is a video on Goji Juice that's really good: http://www.getgojiberries.com

Eat a bowl of cooked oats in the morning and it keeps u going almost through the whole day. Fruit in between and a good exercise routine 3 times a week. The FlabaLoss is really great and u get a whole workout for 10 mins - 3 times a week. I keep away from bread - any colour - and marg. A banana every morning loads u up with energy. Being a busy person I have a very light lunch - so I settle for a yoghurt and a fruit. Enjoy and try:):)

I tried LIMU for 3 months---I did NOT have the results you report, but have heard many similar stories. At first it sounded very promising and worth trying, but in my case the high cost of the product was in no way justified by any positive results. My neighbor is a distributor, and tried to get me similarly involved, which I might have done had the product worked for me.

to the woman with restless leg syndrome ---pls pls pls DO NOT take prescription for it.
it is a lack of minerals in the body---find a powdered mineral-multi and try taking powdered magnesium before you go to bed not only does it help you sleep but it is lack of magnesium that makes are legs jumpy.

Hi Dr. Oz: I would like some info on restless legs. I have tried everything that I have read about, and nothing seems to work. I don't like taking perscriptions.Right now I'm taking Requip. Some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. Are there any natural cures? What is the cause of this? Thank you

Good Morning, I read your info everytime you send me info. I have put to use a lot of your ideas. Thanks for all the great information.

I have a real problem with my weight (212 lbs) and can't seem to get it off (Woman 5'5" 68 yrs old). I'm going to try some things I've done off and on haphazardly -- and try to do them consistently. What do you think: I don't have time to exercise at a gym -- but when I run in place; pump legs, do squats while doing 1 hr. of housework upstairs, then an hr. downstairs -- get in 2 hrs. of heavy sweating -- and get something done besides. For lunch I go out and work in our woods doing wildfire prevention work (heavy sweat when come in). Before dinner am doing a survey with local subdivision people regarding too many black bear in our neighborhood in the summer. For meals, I want to concentrate on eggs, milk, salads, fish, carrot, squash, brocolli/cabbage/cauliflower, sprouted lentils/oats/barley cooked together with onion/garlic with frozen green beans and chopped spinach or mustard greens added last -- along with some olive oil, spices and balsamic vinegar; other sprouts added to salads. Berries and whole grapefruit/orange as my fruit. Eat these in moderation along with lots of water. All foods organic as much as possible.

Want to also be in bed by 10 p.m. and up by 7 a.m.

Have you any other suggestions?

Hi Everybody, I lost 80 lbs. before I found out that I have diabetes. Now I am hungry all of the time & I gain some of that weight back. I give myself 4 shots a day. My doctor said if I can lose weight again then I might me able to go on the diabete pill instead. Thanks

would like to know more about the acai berry and how it helps lose weight.

Posted by: jenevie jo stone | November 14, 2008 at 09:07 AM

I have been drinking Dr Oz's green drink for about two months now. It is great and now I actually like the taste, but at the same time my appetite has been going off the roof. I h ave never had weight problems but I have gained four pounds in two months now. So I started looking into the effects of what I have been adding to my diet and it turns out that ginger which is my favorite ingredient in the drink is an appetite stimulant. But I am confused because some articles online are selling it as an appetite suppressent. What is the deal?

Posted by: BA | October 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM

The way to eat a diverse diet while limiting food choices is simple and is outlined in what seems to be a straight forward manner to me. Limit food choices--which are those things that we don't need and are killing us. Easy. Donuts, Mcd's or anything hydrogenated. Eat a diverse diet-- which are those many, many food items that are good for us. Spinach, steak, eggs, oranges, brown rice etc. Eat as large a variety as you are able.

Posted by: Lee-Ann | October 27, 2008 at 08:05 PM

I would actually like to know how you can have a diverse diet at the same time as limiting your food choices. Both are recommended in this list and around the site, and they directly contradict one another. It's stuff like this that makes this kind of thing so hard to deal with - you never know what's actually good information and what isnt. How can you trust any site that puts two directly conflicting suggestions in the same list, and not only are they in the same list, but they're right next to each other. Dealing with weight issues is difficult enough without having to contend with this kind of thing!

I agree, try dr.oz's "green drink", it's great.

No lower back pain; I had a wart type bump on my finger that kept coming back; just two days ago I realized it was gone! I am totally sold on this drink! If you want more info contact me!! LIMU comes from seaweed, off the islands of Tonga; seaweed, we all know has remarkable healing powers. The active extract from the seaweed is Fucoidan-researched for years by scientist. If you want to learn more please go to my website at http://pcorbeil.originallimu.com/ or email me at email address! Goji juice has become a must in my life and for my husband. Blood sugar levels have dropped, cholestrol levels dropped, better quality sleep and more energy. I am much less bitchy too - a sense of well being, that's a real plus. Ask me about it.

It is not a good idea to wait to eat breakfast. While we sleep our metabolism rests as well. The first time we eat wakes up our metabolism to its full potential. That is why it is best to eat breakfast right away and eating every 2-3 hours will keep your metabolism running at its best and help keep your body from storring extra fat. Eat a snack in-between meals is best and will help keep you from over eating at meal time.

Posted by: Brandi | September 26, 2008 at 10:56 AM

I eat like a diabetic, every 2-3 hours. My in-betweens are always fruit and my meals and and choices are always potion controlled. Portion size is a big key to losing weight. I eat 4 servings of veggies, 3 fruits, 3 (VERY LIMITED CHOICES OF) starch, 2.5 protiens, one fat choice and one dairy choice daily. I drink a lot of water as well. I have an egg for breakfast every morning with a serving of fruit and a slice of low cal bread with fat free jam spread on it. I learned this behavior with LA Weight Loss a few years back. I've lost 18 pounds in as many weeks.

Posted by: Denise | September 26, 2008 at 08:24 AM

One of the great appetite suppressants, I've found, is simply to apply a little blistex or other such lip balm under your nose...it works better than scent in general. It's not horrible or unpleasant, just removes all thoughts and triggers for food.

Posted by: bit by bit | September 26, 2008 at 04:20 AM

These are all pretty much well known. I almost always take half my meal home when going to restaurants plus, sometimes you can pay more and get the larger portion to get 3-4 meals out of it. I know I don't always exercise the way that I should but even when I clean the house or walk the dog; I know in my mind I am exercising.

My doc wants my cholesterol to be "50" and its now 83. Did I hear him wrong or what. I am on low chol. lo salt diet now and don't see how I can give up the little protein i eat mainly from meat. I am allergic to soy products. Thank you Lynne @ proffetuski@cox.net

Feeling Woozy? It doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I also ususally eat breakfast at work, but I don't get up really early either. When I eat a breakfast that includes enough protein, it lasts longer. Sounds like its better to eat eggs. When we go too long, our bodies get really effecient and pack on the fat.

Posted by: Roxanne | September 02, 2008 at 11:27 AM

surprising about eating breakfast an hour after waking...i had an article sometime back by those weight loss gurus who said eating breakfast early for those who wake up early will make you eat more durin the day, so the best would be to eat breakfast about 9 am or so..so it stays over until lunch so you dont feel like eating anything else inbetween. i have been doing that for the last two weeks. i wake up at 6 am and eat breakfast at the office at 8.30 or 9.00 am. i feel a bit woozy after a while...but anything to cut calories..because if i eat too early, i end up in snacking until lunch..this way i have stopped snacking..so who is correct?
