10 Ways to Outwit Your Appetite
10 Ways to Outwit Your Appetite

You don't have to be smarter than a quiz-show fifth-grader to learn how to control the urge to eat. Just follow these ingenious tips to keep your appetite under wraps:

Feed it protein for breakfast. You'll be less hungry later on and end up eating 267 fewer calories during the day. At least that's what happened on days when St. Louis University researchers gave overweight women two scrambled eggs and two slices of jelly-topped toast for breakfast rather than about half that protein.

Make it climb a flight of stairs. At home, store the most tempting foods way out of reach. For instance, Cornell University food psychologist Brian Wansink, PhD, keeps his favorite soda in a basement fridge. "Half the time I'm too lazy to run down there to get it, so I drink the water in the kitchen."

Sleep on it. People who don't get their 8 hours of ZZZs experience hormonal fluctuations that increase appetite, report researchers. Learn more about how sleep affects your diet.

Give it something else to think about. When scientists scanned the brains of people eating different foods, they found that the brain reacts to fat in the mouth in much the same way that it responds to a pleasant aroma. So if you feel a craving coming on, apply your favorite scent.

Never let it see a heaping plate. The more food that's in front of you, the more you'll eat. So at a restaurant, ask your waiter to pack up half of your meal before serving it to you, then eat the extras for lunch the next day.

Put it under the lights. You consume fewer calories at a well-lit restaurant table than you do dining in a dark corner. "In the light, you're more self-conscious and worry that other patrons are watching what you eat," explains Wansink.

Talk it down. Entertaining friends with a great story doesn't give you much time to eat up, so you'll probably still have food on your plate when they're done. Once they're finished, call it quits, too.

Offer it a seat. If you sit down to snack -- and use utensils and a plate -- you'll eat fewer calories at subsequent meals.

Satisfy it with soup. Start lunch with about 130 calories worth of vegetable soup and you'll eat 20% fewer calories overall during lunch, say Penn State experts.

Give it little choice. Packages that contain assorted varieties of cookies, candy, dips, cheese, etc., make you want to try all the flavors. The effect is so powerful, says Wansink, that when people are given 10 colors of M&Ms to munch on, not 7, they eat 30% more!

Oh, and one more thing: Feeding your appetite a diverse diet that is low in calories and high in nutrients can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger. Sweet.

Dr. Oz says he makes a breakfast drink for himself many mornings that he calls his green drink.

What's in Dr. Oz's green drink?

Ingredients:

2 cups spinach
2 cups cucumber
1 head of celery
1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
1 bunch parsley
2 apples
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon

After everything is combined in a blender, this recipe makes 28 to 30 ounces—about three to four servings. Oprah takes a sip and is pleasantly surprised. "It's a glass of fresh," she says.

Dr. Oz's second drink might not be as pleasant, but it's still important—a shot of cod liver oil. "First of all, cod liver oil has the right kind of vitamin D in it—vitamin D3. That's why people who live in the north lands who don't get any sun at all can still survive. It's got the healthy fats that you want in it," Dr. Oz says.

Here is the requested information about Goji. I have been using it for about a year and am taking about half the medication I took at that time. It tastes wonderful and seems to work for many different issues.

Good question I read, where do we get the goji berrries, or the other ones mentioned?
Also I would like advice about my hands, I had a tooth infection 2 years ago this JAN, last year my hands started bothering me at the joints, progressively. I went to mexico, got 4 teeth removed, my left hand joint problems went away, and more joints were affected on my right hand! Now thereis an obvious growth on my left wrist thumb side and it hurts, and my knuckles on my right hand are starting to curl in, and hurt.....
I have done 2 cleanses, and am a vegetarian, I take all the supplements needed, and now take the cod liver oil, is there anything else, somedays I am in a lot of pain. I went to an addiction conference in Sacramento where Dr. Kenneth Blum spoke about an addiction gene, and ppl with it hurt more than others cause the pain doesn't turn off easily, it lingers......
can u suggest anything? plz?
thank you
gina

where do i get the Gogi berries? pls/ ths

Posted by: rita petko | November 12, 2007 at 01:24 PM

The green drink called for 4 stalks of celery, about 1/2 cup of spinach,1 cucumber, 1 apple, lemon, lime, and about 1/2 piece of ginger....I made it and didn't like the taste of the lime and ginger so next time I wouldn't put lime and would put even less ginger. I wasn't sure about sizes and amounts of certain things....I'll just play around till I get a taste I can live with!! Hope this helps

I also would like to have the recipe for the green juice. It was so fast at the show , I could not get all the ingredients and amounts.
Thank you,Sonia

I would love to introduce people who are wanting to become healthy be feeding all the cells in your body with nutrients that will allow your cells to communicate with each other for better health.

I would also like the recipe for the green drink. My question is: I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder and I have severe lower back pain. I HAVE to move but the pain level is so great that it keeps me from walking and weight training is just out of the question. What can I do to build muscle and get the exercise I need to lose the 100 pounds I need to lose?

Posted by: Cheryl Grand | November 12, 2007 at 11:43 AM

Has anybody had any long term luck with Goji juice therapy?

I started a couple weeks ago and feel ok (using to treat PMS and mood balance), just not sure if it is a placebo thing!

Thanks,
Carol

Sometimes I will chew gum that is REALLY strong with peppermint or suck on strong menthol cough drops to curb my snacking. When you have to conciously spit out your gum, or have a medicine tasting mouth, the snacks lose their appeal.

When I'm cutting veggies to put in a salad for my family for dinner I snack on them. I eat less dinner then.

Just wondering how people feel about splenda products in soda, etc. Is splenda safe to consume?

Try eating oatmeal in the morning. It stays with you a long time and keeps me feeling full.

Feed your appetite good food in the right balance and never let yourself get too hungry. I always use a small plate and fill half of it with green leafy vegetables, one quarter of it with a good starch (like sweet potatoes, brown rice or whole grain pasta) and one quarter with a good protein (like chicken breast or wild caught salmon). If you are overweight you may need to start with a larger plate and then, over time, substitute smaller and smaller plates. I call this squezzing your food.

Thanks, everybody and RealAge!
Whenever I eat, I eat a little PROTEIN FIRST .. and then carbs. Before I eat a piece of fruit, I eat a couple of Brazil nuts or 3-4 nuts of some other kind... or just a quarter of an ounce of sharp cheese... or a half a glass of skim or low fat milk.
I try to think about the foods I love that are healthy instead of "missing" the junky stuff.

Hi Drs. Roizen and Oz-

These weight maintenance tips are very powerful. I also measure amounts and avoid foods where a subtle allergy can trigger my hunger.

Thanks for the email tips from Real Age, your new book and the life saving work you do. Please keep more data coming.

Regards,
Dave

Another idea....I chop up fresh vegetables everyday and have them ready to eat. I also keep almonds and walnuts at hands reach. I also keep a bottled water in the car too. Try pomegranite juice, nothing white, and watch the weight come off. I'm almost 56 and I dont look it and feel the best ever! I love sharing ideas........Try this.

Great tips! I'll remember them. Thankyou

Another way to outwit your appetite is to have in the fridge and on the table only foods that you don't like too much. You will feel sick of them and will eat just for living and won't live for eating.

I would like to make this drink but would like to see a recipe or info on how to process these fruits/veges.

Thanks,
