Apple Cider Vinegar: Secret Beauty Potion?
Apple Cider Vinegar: Secret Beauty Potion?
For as long as there have been folk remedies, apple cider vinegar has been touted as a cure-all for all kinds of skin and hair problems. True, the mild acid is natural, preservative-free, antibacterial, and about as cheap as beauty treatments come. But does it live up to its rep? We asked RealAge's skin- and hair-care expert, dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD, about the four most common claims for apple cider vinegar and whether dousing yourself in its powerful (sourful!) scent is worth it. True or False? To speed healing of sunburned skin, apply compresses dipped in cold apple cider vinegar. False. "Rather than offering relief, this might really sting," says Dr. Wechsler. Basically, you're putting an acid on a burn. Ouch. "Instead," she suggests, "just soak the compresses in cold water or dip them in a mixture of cold water and whole milk -- the fat in milk is a good skin soother." True or False? To restore shine to dull hair, rinse it in lukewarm water, douse with 1/4-cup apple cider vinegar mixed into a pint of water, then rinse again with lukewarm water. True. "The acid in vinegar washes away styling products that can cling to hair despite shampooing. Just be sure to dilute the vinegar in water for gentler action." Colorist Lana Gordon of the Cristophe salon in Beverly Hills seconds the doctor's opinion, but adds one caveat: Because the acid closes the cuticle of each hair strand, tresses are shinier but flatter. In other words, you're trading a little less fullness for a little more gloss. True or False? Dabbing on apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball is a good astringent for oily, acne-prone skin. False. "Vinegar is much too drying to the skin's protective barrier. Plus, it stinks!" says Wechsler. "If you want to go the do-it-yourself route, try making your own kinder, gentler toner of 1 part witch hazel to 3 parts water." True or False? Apple cider vinegar helps control dandruff by killing off the fungus that causes it. Maybe. "Some reports say cider vinegar zaps the microscopic critters, some say it doesn't. Until we know for sure, why give fungus more growing time when there are so many dandruff shampoos that will quickly solve this itchy, flaky problem? But if you want to try it anyway, use a concentrated rinse of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts warm water." The payoff for doing things that really help your skin and hair? Far bigger than you'd think. Feeling good about how you look is essential to your self-esteem, and taking excellent care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge as much as 16 (!) years younger.

I am trying the ACV tonic to help reduce severe menopausal symptoms. Since my hysterecotomy in 4/06, I have tried prescription hormones, bio-identical hormones, herbs, vitatmins, and various soy products, but have had no relief. My total cholesterol is high, so I take Zocor. I had my doctor prescribe Ambien so I could just sleep through my night sweats. I also take an antibiotic (Minocin) 2x daily for adult acne. I take Ativan nightly to help with anxiety. For chronic back pain, I take Ultram 2x a day. What meds can I safely take as the ACV works in my system? Is there hope that the ACV tonic will eliminate the need for some, if not all, of my currect medications? Posted by: Amelia | July 21, 2008 at 09:03 AM
As an acid reflux remedy I eat 1/2 an apple and drink a full glass of milk everytime by acid reflux flares up...
I read about this recently at http://www.stoprefluxnow.com - the doctor on the site talks about naturally curing acid reflux... I found his article very informative and helpful, plus the reflux remedy works great
Just thought I'd share that, hope it helps someone else too :)

i am 34 and have had dark circles as long as i can remember. They have got worse probably due to skin thinning with age. I have spent copius amounts of money on creams and gels, none of which worked at all. 4 weeks ago, i decided to take the natural approach. I gently dab 1 part organic cider vinager, 3 parts water around the dark circles. I then apply a paste made up of fengrueek leaves, ground almond and milk. I leave it on for as long as possible, (usually 20-30 mins) every day. I have also been drinking apple cider vinager and water every day. It has only been a month and i am astonished at the results. People always used to comment on how tired i look, but now they are telling me how well i look. It is absolutely brilliant. I don't know which part of this concoction is doing the trick, but i'm not changing it, because it's working wonders. I still apply my eye cream after i clean the paste off to keep the area moisturised. If you look like a panda, try it! Posted by: alesa | January 27, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Use regular dandruff shampoos?Pff they are crap, they are very drying too. Apple cider vinegar is much kinder to my scalp and hair. Posted by: bluestar | January 01, 2008 at 08:04 AM
I have a lot of extreme hotflashes daily. I read that a pain center in the Chicago area gives anestetic shots in a gland in the neck. Are these safe? I have tried hormones & over the counter remedies, does anyone know what might help me??? I read in your column about apple cider vinegar. What proportions is used? I have not heard of this! My husband was on the purple pill for years until we read about ACV. 2T before a meal & no more reflux. I also keep a spray bottle of ACV in the shower for dry hair and softer skin plus cleaner shower.

I took part in a study 2 yrs. ago about thinning hair. We were told to eat 2 slices or more of beets each day. There were 6 people women and men in this study and it worked for the ones that participated each day. After 6 mos. or so we were told we could eat beets every other day and still maintain. It did make my hair not as thin and not as much comes out in my comb each time I wash it. The beets can be just canned or pickled hot or cold. Just eat it once a day for at least 6 mos. The lady who asked me to do this is my dr. wife and my friend. She and her daughter did it and it worked for them. She took pictures of before and after 1 month, 2nd month and etc. I could not believe the difference. Of course I love beets and it was no problem for me. Some times I ate them as a snack a few right out of the jar. I make my own pickled beets with cider vinegar (half cup) and 12 packets of Splenda. or use 1/2 to 1/3 cup sugar instead and use reserved juice from the beets(canned) to cover. Put in pint jar or other container with tight lid and shake and turn over everytime you open the fridge for 24 hrs. You can adjust this up or down in sweetness and tartness. Also make up 2 or 3 cans of beets and use a quart jaror container. Good luck! It works! Posted by: ginnyt | December 07, 2007 at 03:20 AM
Drink it with other drinks, or water, put it on skin, burns, boils etc. Gargle with it. Clean with it.

Itching. GET SOME! TRY IT & YOU WILL SEE! Acne, weight loss. Everything listed here it has worked for. BEST INVESTMENT YOU WILL MAKE. Cleans tartar on teeth. NATURES MIRACLE JUICE. I use it for everything now. Posted by: Suzelle Smith | December 06, 2007 at 09:29 PM
I haven't seen this one posted, maybe it will help someone. Ever since I was a kid, whenever one of us would be throwing up due to a virus, etc., my parents would grab a bottle of cider vinegar, pour the vinegar over one of their hands, and stick their hand under our face as we threw up in the toilet, telling us to take deep breaths of the vinegar. Sounds weird, but the pungent smell of the cider vinegar stops the retching and helps to settle the stomach. This is an old Greek remedy (like the Windex in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", ha ha). Try it, I do this now with my own kids and it really works. Posted by: Karen | December 06, 2007 at 06:36 PM
I have been using Braggs Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar for about 8 months with a group of co-workers and we all have seen great results. Lower blood pressure, reduced water retention, increased energy, joint pain relief, soft skin, and so many others. And yes it does work on the dandruff and shine.. I use it as a rinse about 1once a month.. and I also use it for bug bites as well. If you don't believe me check it out online. Search for benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar. Also the Braggs Apple Cider Book has tons of natural remedies. Posted by: DB | December 06, 2007 at 06:10 PM

cider vinager is a miracle for burns, when i was 15 i worked in a fish and chips place and accidently stuck my hand in the fat fryer, the greek owners grabbed me and poured white vinigar over my hand and i had no after affects,no peeling, scars etc.
have used apple cider for sunburn, wonderful, skin rashes, gargled for sore throat, a cup or two in the bath gets rid of dry skin and itch, and leaves a clean tub. friend of mine developed severe scorisis
so severe she considered suicide, told her to bathe with acv ,it relieved the itch and took the scales off, she kissed me and thanked me now she could deal with it that i had saved her life. Posted by: tina propper | December 06, 2007 at 09:22 AM

To Keith about his son's acne on his face and chest. Try the Murad system. IT REALLY WORKS! It's not that expensive either. I had pretty bad acne as a teenager and then adult onset acne for years and years. I tried everything, ProActiv, acne pads, every kind of acne treatment out there, but Murad worked wonders. Now, it's not a "natural" method, but all the ingredients they use are natural botanicals. My skin is less oily and crystal clear now, thanks to Murad. I have what is called exime(allergy) in my right hand. It started when my hand was in gloves, latex or non-latex and handled hot bottles in lab. The skin of the right hand got damaged, red, dries, opened and itchy. It got well temporarily when I stopped doing those things. Now, when my right hand gets wet, it makes blisters, red, very itchy and oozes out when I scratch it. Then the skin forms scales. My GP gave me Elocon 0,1% creme which helps. But, is there any natural remedy for this allergy?. Thanks. Pery. Posted by: Pery | December 04, 2007 at 06:50 PM
Years ago I read a short article in a health magazine that featured leg cramps. The article piqued my interest since I had recently started having leg cramps while in bed at night. The article promoted the use of two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of whatever (I use plain tea ) as a cramp preventative. I drink a cup about three times per week and it really works! 1). All the ladies with hair loss should be tested for thyroid problems, especially low thyroid. It will take a few months to get your dosage of thyroid medication correct with several tests but once you have the correct amount of the hormone hair loss will go back to normal. If you take your thyroid medication with 2 glasses of water at least one hour before eating breakfast you can eat pretty much what you want. Calcium supplements need to be at least 6 hours later. Until you get the right amount of hormone in your system saturated fat should be limited. I have just spent the last year going thru this. 2). Use Vicks vapour rub for toenail fungus. It works but takes a while as do the prescription drugs but without any side effects. 3). It is better to use a good dandruff shampoo and kill the stuff causing the itching quickly and then use the vinegar treatment regularly. 4). Vinegar certainly helps prevent problems with burns of all kinds (maybe not 3rd degree) and also tea or tomatoes in all forms. I have been using it for 55 years after blistering my arm one summer on a trip. A cook told me about the tomatoes and it works. Once I spilled boiling hot tea all over me. Where it air dried without being dried with a towel there were no after effects but redness and burning where I dried it with a towel. Posted by: Wanda | December 04, 2007 at 12:46 AM
When we were children (in the 1950's) anytime we sunburned our parents put us in a tepid bath laced with a cup or two of apple cider vinegar. If there wasn't any vinegar they used tea. These old "folk" remedies worked magically. Today, doctors are too eager to prescribe pharmaceuticals. What a pity! Posted by: Toni C. | December 03, 2007 at 09:28 PM

Re Sylvia Thomas' question regarding dark circles and age spots. Age spots can be lasered but will return if a sun block isn't used continuously. A noted plastic surgeon told me nothing could be done for dark circles. He said I would be throwing my money away also if I bought products that claimed to erase or diminish dark circles. About 60 years ago, when I was a small child, I was badly burned by hot coals. They spilled out all over my legs. Before rushing me to the doctor, my mother poured vinegar all over my legs. My legs eventually healed with no scarring except for one on my ankle, she missed. I had on my little white high top shoes and a small piece of the smoldering coal was down in my shoe. The ankle was treated until it healed but I still have this huge scar only there where the vinegar was not used. Posted by: Mary Jane | December 03, 2007 at 07:44 PM

I would like to know more about using ACV to control fire ants. How much do you apply, and do you use it full strength? Thanks Posted by: Betty | December 03, 2007 at 05:36 PM
I used to have bad flaky, dry skin on my face, my dermatologist said it was a fungus so she perscribe benzoyl peroxide. That only made it worse, I started putting apple cider vinegar on my face after showers and after three days my skin stopped flaking and there was only a little bitof redness and that went away after a week, now my skin is crystal clear. Posted by: Josh | December 03, 2007 at 04:51 PM
I learned about using apple cider vinegar to kill fire ants in an organic gardening class. I've been using it for years and it works. The bonus: no posions are used on your yard. Posted by: L. Hailey | December 03, 2007 at 04:40 PM
Does the weight or inches loss work with the apple cider vinegar drink even if you have thyroid problems? I only gained weight after my thyroid messed up and I have found nothing that helps with weight loss. I never lose or gain, I have hit a weight and it may vary a pound either way but never more no matter what I do. So many things you can't use if you take thyroid meds, maybe not true with ACV?
I would appreciate anything anyone could do to help enlighten me on this matter. Posted by: L. B. | December 03, 2007 at 04:04 PM
I didn't read all of the comments, but I did soak my teenager's feet in diluted apple cider vinegar to get rid of her athlete's foot. I read it in my natural home remedies healing book. Apple Cidar Vinegar for sunburn..you said false. Well, it must be with different people's skin because it always worked for me. Whenever, which is seldom, I would get a sunburn, after showering, I would pour a cup or more vinegar on my body and the sunburn would fade away leaving a nice color within a day. Yes, it does sting a second afterwards, but it worked for me as I said. By the way, I would mix it in water and sip it throughout the day also. ACV is one miracle cure in my book. "Rather than offering relief, this might really sting," says Dr. Wechsler.
I noticed the word MIGHT. I guess she never tried it. I have used it many times on
sunburns and found that it tends to take the sting out. Oh this isn't to say it gets rid of it entirely but it certainly makes it less painful. Posted by: Bill | December 03, 2007 at 12:14 PM
from The Fat Flush Plan by Ann Loise Gittleman, which I highly recommend, "Studies have shown that consuming vinegar or lemon juice with meals can lower blood sugar by as much as 30%. The acidity in these helps slow stomach emptying, which means that food takes longer to reach your small intestine and bloodstream. Carbohydrates are digested more slowly, and glucose levels are thus lower. Thus the the plan includes a daily drink of hot water and lemon juice and suggestions throughout the menus for using apple cider vinegar." I douse my salads with flax seed oil and apple cider vineger for a tasty & healthful dietary alternative. I lost pounds easily with this health centered plan. Apple cider vinegar is the best thing I know to put on a burn. It seems to neutralize, not just cool the area. It was proven to us years ago when my husband got a steam burn on his left arm as he took the cap off an overheated radiator. It was a bad burn and covered about 15 square inches of his forearm. I told him about an article I had just read which suggested using apple cider vinegar on burns. He decided to try it since we were on vacation and had none of our usual resources available to us.
We wrapped his arm with a lightweight kitchen towel soaked in apple cieder vinegar. As the towel dried out, we would resoak it.He got no other treatment. His arm did not blister or show any sign of burn, including sensitivity to heat. He continued to drive for the entire vacation as he always did - with his arm resting on the open window sill. (This was almost 40 years ago - before air conditioning was common in cars!) It was a bad burn and quite painful or he would not have agreed to anything so foolish as smelling like a salad for most of the day.
We have used apple cider vinegar for burns since that time with the same result. Just last week I got some hot greasy soot on my wrist while loading firewood into my stove. The soot stuck like hot wax. I had barely touched the edge of the door, but by the time I walked across the room to the sink, the skin had started to raise and blister. I stuck my wrist under cold water to wash off the soot while I reached for the apple cider vinegar. I kept the vinegar on it until it stopped hurting when exposed to the air (about two hours). The blistering stopped immediately and there was no sensitivity to heat. It scabbed nicely and healed well.
Apply as a compress until the area is pain free when exposed to the air. Even if the application of the vinegar is at the end of a long day in the sun, it will lessen the effects of overexposure.
We have never had a negative experience, but if the vinegar stings, just wash it off with water.
My experience is that application of apple cider viegar lessens the severity and symptoms of a burn. Posted by: dr | December 03, 2007 at 11:24 AM

I used to work at a little aquarium next to a beach. We always kept vinegar around for cleaning the glass, because if some accidentally got sprayed inside the tank, it was less toxic to the fish than the ammonia of commercial glass cleaners. We would also use the vinegar if kids came in from the beach with jellyfish stings -- I guess the acid must break down the venom. Posted by: Jason | December 03, 2007 at 10:09 AM

It is important to use raw apple vinagar for best results. Dermatologists are educated to push drugs, why would they consider anything else? Doctors are good for surgery, broken bones, stitches and for the rest they treat the problem not the cause of the problem. It is your responsibility to get educated because your doctor isn't, learn the cause of your problem, don't use bandade solutions or your health will continue to decine. The recipe you want is one pint of Gin and one pound of golden raisins. I use just a little more raisins. Place both in a large Pyrex bowl, not sure why this but they say it is important. cover for three days on the counter, stir up several times a day. Next put the contents in a quart canning jar cover with good new lid. Take 9 raisins a day I started with more and now take about 12 because I am over two hundred pounds. Some pain still exists but I have much better range of motion in my thumbs which had been so bad I could not touch my thumb tip to my little finger tip. now I can touch the first knuckle of both digits together. No other remedy was used before I had these results which began in the first week. Do not refrigerate. Posted by: gary Scott | December 03, 2007 at 08:42 AM

I had a friend whose mom is overweight and she had a anigogram done and the doctor did it 2 times because he could not believe there was no plaque build up in her arteries. She states it is because she adds 1-2 teaspoons with a glass of warm water every am and drinks it. As a dental hygienist I see people with tartar build up on their teeth. Alot of these people have cholesterol problems. Research is showing a correlation between the two. So I started telling my patients about taking the apple cider vinegar and those who did it including myself have found that we do not get that much build up on the backs of our teeth. Yes everyone gets build up on the backs of their teeth that is why I have a job. The other thing that I have done is to eat 1 apple a day. I have found that if I do not take the apple cider vinegar all the time but just eat the apple I can get the same result with reduced tartar. I say try it. Vinegar has worked great as a dandruff treatment for me and I only did this treatment twice. I had terrible dandruff, but once when reading Prevention magazine, a reader wrote into the editor on how vinegar stopped their dandruff. I gave it a try - I washed my hair normally, lightly dried my hair and then I poured 1 cup of vinegar over my scalp. I then covered my head/hair with a shower cap for one hour. (got out of the shower and read a magazine) I then rinsed & styled as usual. My dandruff dissappeared & was gone for years. I have only had to repeat this treatment one time since the original time. I don't know why it worked, but it did work for me & I no longer had to buy dandruff shampoo. I suggested it to my daughters & they had great results also. I did not find irritating, I don't know if this would bother others or not. Posted by: Zinnia | December 03, 2007 at 08:08 AM
I wear dentures and about 3 times a year I get cancer sores on the bottom of my left side of my mouth . Any remedies for this? Posted by: Barb | December 03, 2007 at 08:07 AM
Human growth hormones are produced during sleep.
As we grow older and sleep less or lose sleep for other reasons the production of growth hormone is decreased. Growth hormone is crucial in many ways, especially in our maintaining normal weight or addressing overweight. If one wants to lose weight, drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in half cup of water for two nights and then drop to a teaspoon in the morning and bedtime. This alone will not replace exercise and eating healthy, but is an efficient and healthy tool to use along with the above if one is trying to obtain a healthy weight. Medical literature says that a specific fungus is only one of several causes of dandruff. This article states it like it is THE cause. Check your facts, people. Posted by: NG | December 03, 2007 at 07:58 AM
I have been using unfiltered apple cider vineagar for years. I use 1 to 1 Vineg. to pure water in a bottle and put on cotton ball and use as astringent - We drink it as I keep a bottle with squirt top at sink and we squirt about a teasp. per cut -- I am stopped ALL the time as to how I have such beautiful skin and what do I use. I am 66 yrs. young and it works inside and out Posted by: ann | December 03, 2007 at 07:55 AM
My girlfriend swears that apple cider vinegar has stopped her hot flashes, and she is quite thin. They are keeping me from ever getting a good nights sleep so I am too tired to work out and am getting fatter and fatter. does this work? Posted by: PB | December 03, 2007 at 07:43 AM
I've heard that dabbing pure apple cider vinegar on those ugly brown age spots will help fade them and with regular applications will eventually eliminate them. Does anyone know if this works? Posted by: Ron | December 03, 2007 at 07:37 AM
the people you interviewed for cider vinegar information, were all in favor of using products made of harmful chemicals. What does that do to your "real age"? Yes, the reason cider vinegar is popular after all these years is it works! Posted by: Matty Maccaro | December 03, 2007 at 07:34 AM
The best brand of apple cider vinegar is Bragg's. It is organic, raw and unrefined .
I had a bronchial condition and cough that did not respond to cough medicine.
I mxed 1/2 cup Bragg's apv with a large dollop of honey,3/4 tsp cayenne
and 1/4 tsp ground ginger. I took a spoonful 3-4 times a day and it cured my cough. Posted by: Pat Lewis | December 03, 2007 at 07:15 AM
Hi Keith,
Before going to bed, have him clean the affected area thoroughly and with a Q-tip apply a generous amount of tea tree oil. You can purchase it in the skin care section of a drug store. Also, taking one zinc tablet with food each day helps with flare ups. Posted by: Merranda | December 03, 2007 at 07:08 AM

I suffer from arthritis in my big toe joints, having read a book which advised taking the following mix twice a day ,tablespoon cider vinegar, teaspoon honey, teaspoon molasses diluted in cup of hot water.
My joints are now painless and some of the movement has returned. Posted by: david griffiths | December 03, 2007 at 06:48 AM
I have fungus on the nails of my baby toes. I would like to know if vinegar applied to the nail would stop the growth of the fungus? A friend of mine did it, but she says you have to do it from a long time but it does work. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Should I try this. The alternative is some cream that could be detrimental to your kidneys, so I am not interested it that. Posted by: Clare Frenette | December 03, 2007 at 06:42 AM

I was about to pay $17.00 for a small bottle of lavendar essence at a natural food store when the saleslady took my hand in hers and told me that I had pH imbalance and that her sister had applied a clean cloth soaked in apple cider vinegar to a similar looking area of her skin with success. I left that store, spent about $1.00 on the apple cidar vinegar, and had great success with only about one application a day over 3 days. Posted by: Yvonne | December 03, 2007 at 06:19 AM
I have witnessed and experienced success in apple cider vinegar treating acid indigestion. One tbs in a few ounces of water provided the slightly elevated acidity needed to thoroughly digest food after overeating. Many people don't understand that the excess food has depleated acidity and that the acid is a result of partial digestion, resulting in gas eruptions. Rather than taking an antacid to relieve this "lack of acidity", a slight increase in acidity gives instant relief and assists in efficient digestion. Posted by: Doug | December 03, 2007 at 06:09 AM
I HAVE RECURRING LITTLE BOILS THAT POP UP MONTHLY AROUND CYCLE TIME. THEY DON'T GET VERY LARGE BUT THEY HURT LIKE THE DICKENS. SOMETIMES THERE IS SECRETION AND OTHER TIMES NOT. IS IT SOMETHING THAT I'M EATING/NOT EATING ? IS THERE SOMETHING TO DETOX MY BLOOD ? Posted by: diane harcum | December 03, 2007 at 06:08 AM
I disagree with the below false response. If you mix 1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts water, this solution kills 98% of bacteria, controls acne, and does not dry and actually adds moisture. I only agree with the false below if you try to put pure apple cider vinegar on the skin. However, I do agree the pure stuff is great to treat cuts in very small areas.:
False. "Vinegar is much too drying to the skin's protective barrier. Plus, it stinks!" says Wechsler. "If you want to go the do-it-yourself route, try making your own kinder, gentler toner of 1 part witch hazel to 3 parts water."

One cider vinegar trick that really works: IMMEDIATELY upon getting a bump that might color as a bruise, dab a cider vinegar-soaked cotton ball on the area for about 3-5 minutes. It will keep that ugly black & blue from showing in most cases. The 'ouch' is still there, and will heal in the normal amount of time, but at least it's not ugly for a few days, too! For someone with fair skin, this tip has been a huge blessing. Posted by: Ginger | December 03, 2007 at 05:52 AM
I have an old book from about 1930 about apple cider vinegar curing many things and I remember that they said in it that it was important that the vinegar was made from 'whole', 'crushed' apples..... Posted by: chris mccasland | December 03, 2007 at 03:35 AM

My hair has been falling out for about a year! Do you know anything that can possibly help me to keep it, something that is not too expensive? I am 73 years old & still have my naturally blond hair but it's getting less & less of it! Please help! Thank you. Posted by: Doris Spachuk | December 02, 2007 at 10:07 PM
Apple cider vinegar, about 2tbs, mixed in about 8 oz of water seemed to help me reduce inches around my waist. I'd drink this concoction daily. It didn't take long to see results. Of course, you can't overindulge when eating. But it did seem to help on the rare occasions of overeating. Posted by: D. | November 19, 2007 at 10:09 AM
