3 Simple Tips for Losing Weight
3 Simple Tips for Losing Weight

Go to sleep. Getting enough sleep every night keeps you slim. Why? When your body doesn't get the 7 to 8 hours it needs every night, it doesn't get a full resupply of serotonin and dopamine, two feel-good brain chemicals it craves. So it looks for ways to replenish them, and guess what immediately releases both in the body: sugary foods. That's why when you're tired you start craving sweets! So tuck yourself in early and stay slim.

Keep your hands full. You'd think that sitting around playing video games, solitaire, or surfing Yahoo! would be a recipe for putting on pounds. Nope. When your fingers are flying, they're not knuckle-deep in a bowl of chips. Now, that's not to say that endless hours on your duff are good for your waistline, but when you keep your hands and brain occupied, you're not automatically reaching for something to eat. In fact, you're probably not even thinking about food. So the next time you start to open the fridge door, turn on the computer or pick up your knitting instead.

Pick and stick. Yeah, sure, variety may be the spice of life. But it can also be the death of dieting. When you have a lot of choices for a meal, it's a lot easier to slip out of good eating habits and into buffet binges. One way to avoid trouble is to eliminate choices for at least one meal a day. Pick the meal you rush through most, and then automate it. For most people, that's lunch. Find a healthy lunch -- maybe salad with grilled chicken or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread -- and have it for lunch every day. Every day. Yes, every day. The less you think about food, the easier it is to control your appetite. And decreasing choices decreases temptations.

All three tips are from two weight-loss experts: RealAge superdocs Michael Roizen, MD, and Mehmet Oz, MD, authors of the huge best-seller, YOU: On a Diet.

Most of us are aware that our body needs minimum hours of sleep in the nights for our brain to function well and for good health. Not many are aware that a good night's sleep helps in weightloss to an extent.

I have a constant ringing in my left ear. They call it Tinnitis.
I have been to my Doctor as well as an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist. They both said there was nothing they could do.
The ENT gave me a sample of a pill he created but it didn't work either. They claim it's from loud noise like working around an aircraft or shooting a gun.

I agree with one of the other person post about having the same lunch everyday. I think for someone to be successful and the weight loss ecspecially when it comes to food is have a little variety in your meal plan. Otherwise boredum comes and hince a food binge waiting to accures.

I am looking for the diet soup recipes. I think I missed logging into that information.

This is interesting while I don't agree with the same lunch every day. I believe if the menu gets boring you may reach for more sweets.

Why not try to eat the way the French do? More than half of Americans are overweight and obesity is rare in France -and so is snacking. In France snacking is uncommon and frowned upon. Proper eating habits, exercise and drinking plenty of water is a safer and healthier way to go.

Alma, My husband refused to take cholesterol meds and the Dr told him to take 200mg of niacin (a B vitamin) everyday. It has worked for him. Now we both take it. You might want to make sure you take the flush free kind.

great tips! presently using all of them plus portion control and tiny healthy mini snacks during the day (i.e. ricecakes, whole grain snack bars, fruit, etc. but all in strict moderation) to keep the metabolism going full force. i'm never hungry so far. have lost approximately 12 pounds over the past 4 weeks in a very healthy way. also....drink lots of water when the tummy growls & walk, walk & walk more!!

Posted by: Ken | April 24, 2008 at 07:58 AM

Ithink the second tips is very useful for loosing weight . every time after eating my lounch to avoid eating more i turn on the computer and sit down. and one more thing if after food immediately you brush the teeth you dont feel to eat more because the test of mouth it will change.

Posted by: fariba_namiranian | April 23, 2008 at 07:38 PM

I agree with Ben, it is best to eat healthy snacks between meals rather than wait until you are "really hungry" to eat your next meal. It will cut down on the amount that you will consume on the next meal if you are not starving to death. It is a well known fact that eating more times throughout the day helps fuel your metabolism to burn more calories. Obviously some sort of physical exercise that is within your capability is always recommended as well. I know this only from experience. I would have never thought that eating more would have helped my weight loss crusade. Now I'm between 10 and 11% body fat and I've never considered myself an athlete. It can be done if you have determination, this is coming from someone who is like everyone else, I have the aches and pains but push myself and am constantly having my will tested by those who prefer the donut and soda over the healthy apple and water snacks around me. Hope this helps.

I have had back surgery, later new damage occured surgery again is out of the question, broke my wrist, surgery again, limited use, I have stomach problems which I take two types of drugs for. My question is what can I do about loosing weight? not being able to exercise or only able to eat certain foods that will not bother my stomach. I want to know for people with problems like this is there a drug available for us? oh by the way I also have hypothyroid.

To Joan concerning monthly period symptoms...one of my daughters discovered a Yogi brand of tea that leaves her totally cramp free so it might help your bloating too.
I don't remember the exact name...something like "women's tea" or "period tea". She buys it at a health food store.

To Karen Barteaux with Celiac...I also have Celiac. It's a funny creature, and yes, symptoms can show up as "delayed" reactions because Celiac prevents the absorbtion of nutrients and thus, slowly affects multiple systems in your body. It can result in other serious long term diseases if left untreated. Learn all you can about this condition. Read labels religiously for "hidden" ingredients like MSG and modified food starch. And try the Celiac support team on sparkpeople.com. It's a great source of info and support.

Just wanted to say that I have recently returned from France, where for three weeks I had three meals a day, period--NO SNACKS. I lost about 8 pounds. The French know the trick to staying thin. Really plan and enjoy your meals sitting down, preferably with other people at the table. Even with wine at dinner, I lost weight.

Posted by: Pym Mumford | April 22, 2008 at 02:53 PM

I disagree with the person who said only to eat when your really hungry. I think its best to eat healthy snacks between meals so your not so starving that you binge on food when its meal time. Things like nuts are good for you.

To Alma - you can lower your cholesterol by exercising more, by taking red yeast rice along with some CoQ10 and possibly some fish oil, and by taking regular saunas to sweat out some of the toxins in your body. Also, there are good ways to get your liver functioning better and you should research this, maybe do some cleanses. Keep up the healthy eating but be vary careful not to over eat as that will stress your liver too.

At 47 I consider myself to be in great shape. I weight train twice a week and do cardio on my off days. What natural remedy could I take so my montly periods would be less stomach bloating and my breast less painful. I can actually take the breast pain, it's the stomach bloating that is more uncomfortable then anything.

brgiri: skipping breakfast is not a good idea. skipping any meal is bad for weightloss. in fact you should be eating more meals. 4-6 small meals a day of HEALTHY food with exercise is the best way to slim down

My multi vitamins from Costco have 3500 mg of vitamin A in them, and that doesn't account for what I get from my diet. Should I ditch the multi-vitamins?

To the individual with IBS: go to helpforibs.com. Heather Van Vorous has some wonderful products for those of us with IBS. By taking her fiber supplement I have total control over my IBS, which plagued me for 20 plus years prior to finding her website. I eat whatever I want __ dairy (especially cheese and milk), any kind of raw veggies __ whenever I want. Eating out used to be a huge problem for me, since I didn't know what ingredients were used in the food prep. Heather's Fiber works whether you have IBS with diarrhea or with constipation. Believe me. You don't have to take prescription medication. You can use natural products to control your IBS.

John,
Try accupuncture, my son had an injured back from hockey and the chiropractor said he could not help him any more. I was so worried he would never be able to play again-he is 16. He tried accupuncture as a last ditch effort-After 5 treatments he has never had another problem, it was like a miracle. See one and see if he can help you.

to John with lumbar pain. John I am a chiropractor, and I suggest going to a chiropractor who also specializes in spinal stabilization exercises. Also make sure your doctor does a exam, x-rays if necessary, explains your diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and treatment plan. Unfortunately there is no magic drug or pill that will cure your low back pain.

To John with lumbar pain.

It is a good idea to see a chiropractor but I injured my cocyxx in a car accident and visited osteopaths, chiropractors and Alexander Techniques teachers for years to no avail. I am now cured due to homeoepathy. Not a lot of people know this but Hypericum is very good for back problems caused by accidents and childbirth. I took 30c strength and followed the instructions on the bottle, but I would recommend visiting a registered homeoepath.

To John with lumbar pain from a car accident... Make an appointment with a Mobility Upper Cervical Chiropractor. This isn't just your standard Chiropractor..There aren't many around but if you can find one in your area I'll bet he (or she) can fix your problem so you will soon be medication free.
Also, Becky & Nevin on weight loss...cut sugar (the white refined kind that is in almost everthing we eat!) COMPLETELY out of your diet. Even if you change nothing else in your life you will begin to lose fat immediately!
Substitute heathy "sugars" like evaporated cane juice (found in soy milk etc..), honey, molasses or xylitol for it. You'll start to feel better too and maybe you will be motivated to walk and exercise more. The good news is that when you stop consuming white sugar your cravings for it stop in just a few days and you'll begin to prefer a piece of fruit etc.. for you "sweet tooth". Good luck!

to maintain your weight @the same weight, you must simply be a mathmetician. Know what each morsel you take in is in calories. write in down and add it up. you are either ''over the limit or under the limit. add a 30 min. walk each day ,plus always keep moving in between work and play. byron

I have high genetic cholesterol and do not want to take medication but after stopping for 6 months and having a test done a few days ago I am very concerned because it was 310 and all the other test where also high but I eat mainly vegetables, fruit and lean meat.I don't eat pork and rarely beef so I don't know what else to do.I walk, don't smoke, rarely drink and eat only whole grain bread. Any suggestions...please?

I was in a car accident about 3 years ago now, and I still have severe back pain in my lumbar area, my doctor perscribed Celebrex and muscle relaxers but I have been taking them for yrs now and doesn't seem to work, and also when I take these perscriptions I tend to sleep for a long period of time, I feel like I have Sleep Apnea, and have alot of depression, and I also gained about 50Lbs sense the accident, how can I make things better.

Posted by: John | April 21, 2008 at 11:14 AM

You have just confirmed what I have adopted as my eating plan. I have one slice of really heavy multi-grain toast with lower fat peanut butter and a half a banana (sliced on top) every day for breakfast. Then I have a Granny Smith apple and a small handful of almonds for lunch. If I "need" an afternoon snack, it is usually a Granola bar. For dinner at least 4 days a week I make soup--veggies, meat, in either low-fat tomato soup or non-fat chicken broth. I do not eat any beef. I occasionally (not more than once a week) have lamb or buffalo in my soup). A small amount of meat may look pathetic on a plate, but seems like a lot of meat in soup (all those years of trying to find the chicken in the noodle soup, I guess). Often an evening snack is fresh fruit and/or veggies (buy already to eat, so I have no excuse not to grab them from the refrigerator.) Eating out is about 80 percent Subway sandwiches--their low fat choices. It is working. I have lost over a hundred pounds in the past 4 years.

PS: Thanks to Dr. Oz for the information I have gotten from you on the Oprah Show.

Posted by: Jan Engle | April 21, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Pick and Stick. I find it very easy to have the same bagel/cheese/fruit breakfast and a big chef-salad lunch every day. Also, by not giving in to snack urges for a few weeks, my body got used to "that's all you are getting until dinner." I can eat with abandon a couple of restaurant dinners a week and not gain an ounce.

Posted by: Parrish | April 21, 2008 at 11:06 AM

I need to lose at least 40lbs. I love salads and veggies. A couple years ago I was diagnosed w/ IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and since then, I have to be conservative with my veggie intake (especially raw veg.) as I just don't digest it very well. I am on daily Rx meds for the IBS but I still have to watch it. I know I need to get more exercize, but do you have any other suggestions for losing weight with a g.i. disorder?

Thanks!

Posted by: tjj | April 21, 2008 at 10:57 AM

The pick & stick really does work, I have a fiber muffin & activia yogurt for bfast every morn, rice cake w/pnut butter for lunch, grapefruit for a snack & I ate a salad and grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat sour dough for dinner all last week and lost 4 lbs.

barley
I recently read that barley is very good for something but I do not remember what?
I finally found pearl barley to add to my homemade cabbage, celery, bell pepper, onion, tomato juice, and salsa soup but I would like to know of what benifit the barley is. I eat the soup every day for lunch and sometimes for dinner, for I am 60 years old and need to lose 50#. I am walking 30 minutes every other day and to weight watchers meeting on Thursday 30 minutes ea. way. I love all that Dr Oz has to say on Oprah and am now eating 100% whole wheat bread before each meal sometimes w/ olive oil.

Nevin,
Sounds like a lack of motivation. You just don't want to lose weight as much as you want to eat and sit. Downloading a program, etc, isn't going to make the motivation, it doesn't create desire. Look at areas of your life where you've succeeded and ask why and how you were motivated. For example, if you did a stellar job on a project at work, ask why. If the answer is, "the approval of my boss is really important to me," then find a situation in which losing weight will fulfil some similar goal. For example, you could get a weight loss mentor, someone you really want to be like, and then tell them your goals and ask them to check in with you. Doing a good job at what you tell that person you're going to do will become important. All of our goals can only be achieved if they are in alignment with what we really value. Eventually, we will value ourselves, our bodies, as much as the other influences in our life, maybe.
Good luck, sweetie. Writing this actually clarified some things to me about myself as well, so I appreciate the opportunity.
--Janice
