Foods That Fight Afternoon Slumps
Foods That Fight Afternoon Slumps
When the afternoon blahs leave us slumped over our desks like an unwatered houseplant, most of us reach for a supersized vat of coffee and/or a calorie-packed sugar snack. There are much better options, whether you need a quick lift to keep you from nodding off in a meeting or something to keep you going for hours.
WATER: Sometimes what feels like fatigue is just dehydration (often made worse by too much coffee). Drink 8 ounces of water, take a quick walk around the block or the parking lot (fresh air is an energy booster, too), and then down another 8 ounces when you get back.
WATERMELON: Like cookies and candy, watermelon is high in sugar, which metabolizes quickly, which gives you a rush. But watermelon's way healthier: Instead of guilt, you get fiber, a hit of vitamins A and C, plus all that fresh, juicy flavor for almost no calories (fewer than 50 a cup). To make your new zip last longer, eat it with some protein and a little fat -- as in low-fat cottage cheese or a fistful of sunflower seeds.
BRAZIL NUTS: They're off the charts in mood-lifting selenium and strong in fatigue-fighting magnesium. Just six of these nuts give you 4 grams of protein and some healthy plant fats, a combo that will keep you going far longer than you'd think.
A MEXICAN BAKED POTATO: Spuds are high on the glycemic index -- that is, they give blood sugar a quick boost -- which is bad for people with diabetes but good in moderate doses for other people in need of an energy surge. Heap on some salsa and top with a dollop of low-fat sour cream to enhance the effect. Spicy foods are stimulating, and hot peppers wake up more than your taste buds.
A FEW DRIED DATES: They were traditionally used in the Sahara to provide quick energy to camels. Like potatoes, dates are a high glycemic snack, but rich in minerals, too -- especially potassium. Split the dates and fill with a tad of low-fat cream cheese to slow the sugar absorption.
PB&J ON WHOLE WHEAT: The all-American sandwich is also an all-around pick-me-up, thanks to its amazingly complete mix of carbs, good fats, protein, and whole-grain fiber. Just make it a one-slice fold-over to cut the calories down to about 200. (For more on how good whole grains are for you -- they even make your RealAge younger -- take this mini quiz.)

Hi, I'm new at this, I found eating less is great. Sometimes I eat wheat cereal for a snack with blueberries, it helps too.

Interesting post, and I'm a big fan of a lot of the foods on that list. And the water thing is true. It's amazing how often we're really just dehydrated. Thanks for sharing. Posted by: Zero Calories | March 11, 2009 at 03:26 PM

I have opted to not take acid reflux medication for my GERD symptoms. Through simple changes of diet acid reflux can usually be avoided. Healthmethod.com has many home treatments for such things as acid reflux. Posted by: TL Tipton | August 11, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Dear Doc.,
I have a big problem, I have been told one doctor that I have rapid limb syndrome, it's the first cousin to rapid leg. I have had this since I was a infant-I have a twin sister who has out grown this. I rock back my leg, full body, and espically my head back and forth when I am sleeping. I have no idea I am doing this, When I wake in the morning I feel my head to see how tangle my hair is--this lets me know how bad I have rocked. I have been given so many different medications nothing works, I usually just feel bad and drugged when I take these drugs. I stopped who wants to feel bad and drug. I have a great deal of headaches, I am always tired--after all I have done physical work all night rocking. I have gain over 30 pounds in less than a year. I have tried so many other otc item from health professionals/nutrients can you help I just turned 51. I go to bed tired and wake tired, the worst part is the headaches I always have. Thank You Posted by: Brenda | June 24, 2008 at 03:44 AM

It's a new liquid multi with 175 vitamins, minerals, herbs, sea veggies, fruits, coq10,and sooo much more. Only 1 cap a day. S.D. Charger's take it and so does Regis. I am really feeling energized. I thought that coconut oil in a solid form with 13 grams of saturated fat was taboo. Is this true? Is coconut oil in a liquid form any better for us?

Ethel: good for you--be patient; like many diets, low-carb may take longer for some people to lose weight on than others. I agree with what you're doing--your other results clearly indicate you're on the right track. Keep it up, and remember, weight is generally the last thing to be affected on any diet (before that, you will start losing inches, people will notice you looking more "toned" in the muscles and you'll start just generally feeling better). I don't know which low-carb diet you're on, whether it's a pre-existing one or one of your own (I'm doing a modified Atkins due to starch allergies--not just gluten, because I also react to potatoes sometimes).
Maria Schinkel, make sure you're not suffering from a pinched nerve if that pain happens again. All that has to happen is for your spine to be out of alignment where your ribs are and your ribs will be moved out of alignment, irritating the surrounding nerves. This happens in the area you mention, on either side of your body--and if it happens on your left side, you can be tricked into thinking you're having a heart attack.
Best of luck to both of you. Posted by: Gamin Davis | June 22, 2008 at 06:17 PM
i am having pain under my rightbreast, Blood test, CT Scan Electrocardiogram at the hospital were all negative. I am still having these pains mainly in the evening. could you tell me if this could be a possibility of gallstones. Thank you. Posted by: manja schinkel | June 22, 2008 at 04:46 PM
Ethel,
You may be gluten intolerant. I found out I am when I read Ultra-Metabolism by Dr. Mark Hyman. I went on his de-tox diet for 3 weeks and when I added gluten containing products back to my diet I once again experienced many of the same symptoms you listed. Get his book, try the diet, test yourself by adding gluten (even small amounts) back into your diet and see what happens. If the effects are adverse get rid of the gluten containing foods in your diet. Not only will you feel much better you will lose weight. I lost 27 pounds and 2 clothing sizes on the 3 week de-tox diet alone! It is satisfying, you will feel great and have more energy than ever. 2 years after the de-tox diet I eat no gluten (it is places you wouldn't expect - The Gluten Free Bible is a great resource too). Good luck to you. Posted by: Kathleen McCutcheon | June 21, 2008 at 06:41 PM

Paget's disease or Osteitis deformans is a disease caused by imbalance between resorption and deposition of bone (natural way of body removing and reproducing bone). more prevalent in older white men, can be symptomatic or asymptomatic, but if symptomatic bone pain is the common complaint. most commonly affects lumbar vertebrae, skull, pelvis and femur (thigh) bone. affected bones become, enlarged, weakened and thickened. patients can complain about their dentures or hat not fitting anymore, or if they have teeth there's spacing between them.it is a slow occurring (chronic) disease. It can cause vision or hearing loss due to enlargement of bone and pinching the nerve passing through. treatment includes biphosphonates, parathyroid hormone antagonists and antibiotics depending on the MD's decision and severity of disease. one serious complication of this disease is formation of bone malignancy (very aggressive osteosarcoma in this case) that mostly develop in pelvis and long bones of lower extremities. for your kidney problem, you have to have it checked with your physician and do renal or blood tests, depending on your concern or symptoms. good luck Posted by: Lena DMD | June 21, 2008 at 04:09 PM
For those of you who can't seem to lose weight, maybe have headaches or migraines, and have been told you have a normal thyroid...Get a head MRI. You might have a pituitary tumor. They are non-cancerous, slow-growing, but cause the pituitary to either quit working or over-work. Either can cause terrible symptoms...or just headaches, migraines, weight gain (no matter what you do), and stress. I had one and even though it seemed like I had an underactive thyroid, every test showed that it works fine...which it does, but if the pituitary can't tell it to work--it won't--and the "test" for the thyroid just gives it the hormone the pituitary is supposed to produce. Oh yes, and the ONLY way it was found was that my tumor had gotten SO large after an estimated 20 years that it was affecting my optic nerves and making me go blind (it went away after surgery thank goodness). Good luck. I feel SO much better. Posted by: CarlaHollar | June 21, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Dr. Oz
I have a very large torn Hiatal Hernia across the middle of my stomach,I am over wieight;need surgery but some of my doctors think that I need to have gas-bypass and they will close the hernia at that time; I will lose the weight faster. Please give me some advise about having this done. The surgical doctor said he was not sure if he would be able to close the herina and it hold. Help!!!!! To Bonita Paz....I have suffered with similar symptoms and had been taking Ranitadine for years....also seemed to develop bladder infection type symptoms and was prescribed antibiotics that never seemed to really work. Went to see a renal specialist in January and he straight away said that it sounded very much like an irritable bladder linked to an irritable bowel. Sems that they both use the same nerves and this is a fairly common thing. He prescribed "Colese" (Mebeverine) which I take 3 times a day...and now skip sometimes!...and now I am problem free in that department! Worth a try!
To David Jeroy who has 'bone on bone' vertebrae...I have the same with my right knee and, after 5 surgeries over 25 years, I,m told that I have to have a total knee replacement. BUT I am going to see a doctor who specializes in 'Prolotherapy' and see if 1. I am a suitable candidate and 2. if it works for my problem. Maybe you should investigate this procedure too. A sugar solution is injected into the area and it stimulates inflamation...this gets the immune response kicked into high gear and the area 'mends'. eg like regrowing cartilage and strengthening tendons and ligaments etc. Worth a try!

What's a good multivitamin for
a 80+ healthy male? Posted by: a salamon | June 21, 2008 at 07:06 AM
Martha, and all others,
Thanks for your advice - but...
I have eaten low fat and whole grain and a lot of fruit for over thirty years because I thought that was a healthy diet. The result was 40 kg I don't need. Then I decided to avoid carbs as much as I can (zero carb is hardly possible) and add cream and butter and fat meat. I have lost 8-10 kg, which isn't much compared to what I want to lose.
So please give me a good reason why I should add carbs; they upset my stomach, give me acne, make me hungrier, make my temper worse, make me feel cold, make me wake up in the middle of the night...I could make the list longer, and yet I thought I felt well before I tried this diet. I was thrilled to see dates on the afternoon snack list to-day. I've been using 3 dates and small handful of almonds with my cup of organic drip coffee, for a few weeks now and I find it a mmm... words can't describe snack Posted by: Rae Hull | June 21, 2008 at 12:10 AM
Hi, people! I need to know if someone out there has had the following symptoms and has found out what causes them.
I am a female, now 64-yrs-old, and I began having abdominal pain and spasms about 4 years ago. Although I did not have gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), my doctor told me to take Zantac 150mgs (Ranitadine is the generic) tabs - one in the AM and one in the PM. This seemed to help quite a bit, for about a year.
Then, about 3 years ago, I began having extreme nausea for 3 or 4 separate days during each month. I couldn't relate the attacks to anything I was doing or eating. I kept a log of the nausea attacks for several months, describing their intensity. One was quite severe, and I threw up violently.
Still, I hung in there and continued to log the attacks.
Then came a change:
One morning a year ago, I had horrible abdominal pain, bloating, spasming -- it's hard to describe it -- and could not even raise up or roll out of bed. I stayed in bed feeling sorry for myself and tried to massage my tummy, thinking it might be an extreme attack of heartburn or gas. It lasted most of the day, but finally I was able to get out of bed, and I took the generic Pepto Bismol tablets for the bad nausea which accompanied the pain.
No diahrrea, no constipation, just nausea and PAIN. If I even pressed "lightly" on my abdomen, the pain was excruciating. I couldn't go to the doctor, since I couldn't even get dressed. I ALMOST called 911, but I hadn't been able to take a shower or wash my hair, and I decided that I'd rather end up on a slab than go to the hospital looking like that! Luckily, the pain began to subside toward the end of the day, and I was able to sleep that night -- more or less.
The next day, although my abdomen was still tender, I was able to get dressed and saw a Gastroenterologist. He told me to take "Omeprazole," so he called it in to my pharmacy. He also ordered many tests! The tests were:
(1) Colonoscopy, even though I had already had one a year earlier. Results: Negative (2) Gastroscopy, a procedure which allows a tiny camera on a tube to peer down your esophagus, into your stomach and a little bit farther down.
Results: Negative
(3) Gall Bladder ultrasound.
Results: No gallstones.
(4) Special test which measures how well the gall bladder is emptying. Results:
Emptying just fine, thank you.
(5) X-rays of my lungs and spine. Results: Hunky-dory
Finally, he gave up.
It WAS discovered that I have "Chilaiditi Syndrome," which means that part of my colon was OVER my liver instead of where it should have been (under it). (Stupid Colon!) This condition is very rare, usually present at birth (congenital) and occurs mostly in men. The doctor told me that he didn't think it had caused my problem. On my own, I tried eliminating wheat and all other glutens from my diet for 3 weeks (that sure was fun), but the nausea still occurred. Then, I eliminated all dairy products for 3 weeks to no avail.
Oh, it turned out that the "Omeprazole" stomach acid reducer had adverse (bad) side affects (the worst being that it caused me to appear to be having something like a Bipolar "high," and I was nervous and jumpy), so I could only stand it for 3 days -- then went back to the Ranitadine (Zantac) I had been taking.
Well, after all of the rigormarole was over, I told myself I would seek another opinion if I had what I affectionaly refer to as ANOTHER "Abdominal Attack."
LUCKY ME! After another year with only mild nausea spells which I took care of by using generic "Pepto-Bismol" tabs, I DID have another one of those babies. It occurred on Tuesday of this week. It was party time!
If possible, it was MORE painful than the first one. I couldn't go to the doctor the first OR the second day. Didn't call "911" for the same reasons as mentioned above.
The pain was finally somewhat bearable, so I scheduled an appointment with a DIFFERENT
Gasteroenterologist. It's on July 7th, since that doctor is on vacation at this time.
In the meantime, I'm working on preparing a clear log of the symptoms and my "Guinea Pig" tests so far to contribute to a possible TV episode of "Mystery Diagnosis." Of course, because of the "sue a doctor" situation, I'll probably have to repeat the whole battery of tests I went through after the first attack. Oh, frabjous days!
But, I DO have hope, (and I'm also delusional.) Maybe THIS doctor will be able to ferret out the cause of the nausea AND the two REALLY FUN TUMMY ATTACKS! This one is female, and everyone knows that women tend to pay more attention to details and usually aren't megalomaniacs. (I'm talking about male "Doctors," guys.--no offense unless you're a Dr.
If there is anyone out there who actually had the time to wade through this tirade, and you have had similar symptoms or know someone who did and was helped or cured, please e-mail me at:
bppace@comcast.net
Any help will be grrrreatly appreciated! (Also, there is a reward for any information leading to a diagnosis.)
Thanks,
Bonnie Pace
P.S. Yes, I ALREADY DID extensive research online concerning my abdominal problems! So far, no dice.

Dr. Oz,
My husband and I think you are amazing.... I just wanted to get your opinion on something. I probably have had this for a very long time but the opthamologist couldn't diagnose it or didn't know what it was in the 70's. Anyway- I'm now 42- when I was 34 or 35 I noticed my vision in my good eye was different or unusual so my husband insisted I go to the opthamologist- the dr. said I have histoplasmosis... I was terrified!!!! Right now it's inactive.... is there something I can do to make sure that it stays inactive as of nutrition, meds., vitamins, etc.? What causes it to become active? I would like to know so that I can avoid what causes it- I know it comes from CHICKEN- FOWL feces. I don't drink alcohol and I have never smoked a day in my life... what else can I do to ensure that it doesn't become active again? THANKS SO MUCH for this website!!!! :) Oh- my e-mail address is sabjordan@aol.com Posted by: Joanna Jordan | June 20, 2008 at 08:49 PM

It might be a good idea to use the entire phrase and not just letters like PB&J. Some people may not know what that means since not all people who are members of this site are necessarily all-American. The Internet is global. Posted by: Krystyna H. | June 20, 2008 at 08:01 AM
I was thin all my life until about 2 yrs ago and now I have gained alot of weight and I am tired all the time.the problem is Thyroid.Low thyroid affects your whole body and can be a lot of peoples problem with weight and body aches. the thyroid controls your metabolism. If you are having proble3ms with weight, concentration, alot of symptoms are caused by a undractive thyroid. Go be tested, it only takes a blood test to see if your thyroid is low.

Ethel (posts #2)
I ended the afternoon slump and the evening crave when I cut out carbs. (wheat intolerance) I lost weight as I had not found substitutes yet. Low carb. IS the way to go, not no carb. Fruit, veg, whole grain, low fat meats. I admit I didn't have a weight issue to start with but I can maintain my weight a lot easier with this diet at 42yrs. I also walk regularly and work in the garden. Posted by: martha | June 20, 2008 at 04:49 AM
Once again, Real Age makes a major gaffe. Six Brazil nuts will have you overdosing on selenium. Two to three are more than sufficient. This is why one should be wary about getting their medical advice off the Internet. Posted by: Brian Miller | June 20, 2008 at 03:42 AM
Since I minimized carbohydrates and added more animal fat in my diet, I don't get these afternoon dips any more. No cravings for sweets; sometimes I eat some 80% chocolate. I sleep better, feel better. I have not lost weight yet, but I believe that will come. Posted by: Ethel | June 20, 2008 at 01:31 AM
The recipe for the green drink is:
4 stalks celery
1 cucumber
1 cup spinach
1 lemon peeled
1 lime peeled
1 large apple
1/2 inch piece ginger
Blend in the blender. You may need to add some water and pass through a strainer. It is great over ice. Good luck! Posted by: Sandy | June 19, 2008 at 11:41 PM
